Orwell, George. 1935 The Clergyman's Daughter. First edition, publ. Victor Gollancz Ltd. Publisher's original full cloth binding, yellow lettering to spine, lacking dust wrapper as is common with this work, wear & occ. staining to boards, lettering faded to publisher's details on spine, extremities bumped resulting in some loss, spine a little cocked & starting to the top of the joints, contemp. date inscription in pencil to front pastedown, both hinges with binding exposed & tender, odd spot internally, otherwise clean.
A Clergyman's Daughter is exceptionally scarce in any edition, owing to Orwell's disdain towards the work, which he demanded not be reprinted 'in any edition' following his death. It is more experimental in form than his popular works of the 1940s, Animal Farm and 1984, and was printed in a run of 2,000 copies, of which this is the fifth to appear at auction in the original cloth in the last 35 years. 8vo.
